Students will read a variety of material this year. Since most real-life reading involves non-fiction, an increased emphasis will be placed on reading information texts. This will include essays, articles from both print and on-line sources, biographical, and autobiographical material. Fiction will not be forgotten, though. Students will be reading novels and short stories written by such authors as Jack London, Maya Angelou, Stephen Crane, and Ray Bradbury among others. We will also explore the genres of poetry and drama.
The ability to write well is a necessary skill in today's world. For this reason a major emphasis in all subject areas is on the writing process. Students will continue to use the John Collins Writing Program to complete assignments across the curriculum.
During my very long association with St. Mary of the Annunciation School as both a parent and a teacher, I have been a part of many changes. One thing has never changed, however, and that is the sense of community that St. Mary's embodies.
