Homework is an important extension of the school day. It is assigned for a variety of reasons including drill, practice, and review. The most important reason that teachers assign homework, however, is to allow the students an opportunity to make a connection to the material they are learning. For it is only when a connection is made that the brain holds onto this new information. Since these “after class” exercises are so vital to a student’s learning, all St. Mary’s students are expected to do and return all homework assignments. And not surprisingly, homework is an important part of every teacher’s grading criteria. Realistically, “home” is not always the best place to complete assignments. Dinner preparations, home responsibilities, sports practices and games, and enrichment activities are just a few of the many interruptions that occur in any typical household. The Homework Place provides students with an opportunity to complete all/some of their homework before they even get home!
